THE SMALL RUMINANT DAIRY PROJECT

Carol Delaney

After a year of work and planning from a dedicated core group that met monthly by conference calls, the Dairy Sheep Association of North America, DSANA was formed. It had its charter meeting at the Dairy Sheep Symposium at Cornell on November 7, 2002. Board members were elected, with Carol serving as secretary on the Board. DSANA offers a quarterly newsletter, discount admission to the annual conference, and a directory. To join, contact Carol Delaney at carol.delaney@uvm.edu or Charles Capaldi at ccapaldi@shepherdsoakfarm.com.

In November 2002, I presented a paper at the 8th Great Lakes Dairy Sheep Symposium held at Cornell University . It was entitled "Start-Up and Operating Costs of Small Farmstead Cheese Operations for Dairy Sheep" and was co-authored by Dennis Kauppila, UVM Extension St. Johnsbury. We took data from local sheep dairies that were early on in their construction of their dairies and cheese operations. It gave realistic numbers for others to make plans with. To get a copy of the article, contact Carol Delaney. To get a copy of the proceedings (148 pages of articles from 24 presenters.), contact Yves Berger, at the Spooner Ag. Research Station in Wisconsin, at ymberger@facstaff.wisc.edu. You can view previous proceedings under "Resources" at the website: http://www.uwex.edu/ces/animalscience/sheep/

Undergraduate student Becca Link finished her self-designed course working at Does' Leap Farm, a goat dairy in Bakersfield, VT. Becca has been accepted into the UVM/Tufts Veterinary Program. Good luck to Becca!
