B.S. Animal Science

Bonnie Cantrell is originally from Caldwell, Idaho. She graduated from Washington State University in 2014 with a B.S. in Animal Science. During her time there, she worked for the Animal Science Department in a bovine genetics laboratory. She worked on projects in the laboratory to help decrease disease susceptibility of Johne's disease and Bovine Respiratory Disease in bovine. Bonnie will be working on her Ph.D. in Animal, Nutrition and Food Sciences with Dr. Stephanie McKay. Her research will focus on finding methylation in multiple regions of the bovine brain that correlate with docility. Bonnie also enjoys crafting in her spare time.

Major: Animal Science

Sydney is an undergraduate student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Honors College. She is working towards her degree in animal science, and she is very interested in animal genetics, primarily the species native to Vermont. She is looking forward to working with Dr. McKay and the rest of the McKay lab.

Fernando Betancourt

Fernando.Betancourt@uvm.edu

Major: Animal Science

Fernando was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is currently an undergraduate student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He is interested in veterinary medicine and zoontic diseases. This past year he was part of the CREAM program from UVM, which is a student-run dairy farm. He also had the opportunity to travel abroad over the summer to work with a wildlife veterinarian in South Africa. In our lab, he is currently working wih the bovine AMPK gene family in which the main focus is to identify the methylated regions in the gene family which are associated with regulating cellular energy and metabolism. Fernando also enjoys outdoor activities, hanging out with friends, and listening to Latin music.
