Analytical Techniques
Our lab provides reliable, high quality analytical services in lipid analysis ranging from single samples to small research projects.

Currently available lipid analyses include:
  • Fatty acid analysis (fatty acid content and profile)
    • Saturated fatty acids
    • Monounsaturated fatty acids
    • Polyunsaturated fatty acids
    • Branched-chain fatty acids
    • Trans-fatty acids (monoenes, dienes, and trienes)
    • Conjugated linoleic acids
  • Lipid class analysis
    • Total phospholipids
    • Individual phospholipids classes including Phosphatidylcholine (PC), Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), Phospatidylinositol (PI), Phosphatidylserine (PS), and cardiolipin
    • Cholesterol (ester)
    • Free fatty acids
    • Triacylglycerides
We have extensive experience in the extraction and analysis of lipids from a wide range of materials including:
  • Vegetable oils and animal fats including marine oils
  • Feedstuffs (e.g., cereals, forages, TMR, distiller grains, corn and grass silages, calcium soaps, etc.)
  • Milk and milk products
  • Meat and meat products
  • Other food items (e.g., baked goods, infant formulas, creamers, dressings, sweets, etc.)
  • Ruminal fluid, duodenal digesta
  • Blood (e.g., plasma/serum, erythrocytes) and tissues (e.g., adipose tissue) for clinical and diagnostic purposes
We routinely use a gas chromatograph (Shimadzu GC-2010) equipped with a highly polar 100 m fused silica capillary column for fatty acid analysis and thin-layer chromatography (TLC), one- or multi-dimensional TLC, for lipid class analysis.
