Another strategy for locating opportunities in the federal government is to contact departments and programs of interest directly.  For example, if you are interested in learning about veterinary-related opportunities at the USDA you can visit its website (www.usda.gov).  Another example:  the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (www.fws.gov).  If you identify an interesting office or program go ahead and contact it -- even if it looks like no internship is available.  Who knows -- If you make your interests and needs known to the right person, you might be able to "create" an opportunity for yourself.  These sites describe departments' programs and opportunities.
