Enhanced Internship Program

Location:  varies, Wisconsin

What is the PDPW Enhanced Internship Program?

This internship program connects dairy producers with college students for an on-farm summer internship. Internships are tailored to meet the individual needs of the farm and allow diversity of duties for the student to be involved in the day-to-day operation of the farm. Additionally, employers are encouraged to allow student exposure to business planning and personnel management on the host farm.

Why the PDPW Enhanced Internship Program?

Many PDPW members have expressed concern that too few young adults view production agriculture as a viable career option in today's economy. In reality, opportunities clearly do exist. However, the opportunities may or may not be in the same form as presented to previous generations. As a result of these concerns, PDPW has been actively working to develop internship opportunities for undergraduate students.

The goals of the PDPW internship program are to increase opportunities for exposure of students to modern dairy production systems and to stimulate career planning with production agriculture considered as an option.

How do I (a student) apply for an internship?

  1. Complete the "PDPW Enhanced Internship Application."
  2. Submit completed form and your resume to the PDPW headquarters (PDPW, N5776 US Hwy 151, Suite 1, Fond du Lac, WI  54937) or via email to sorth@pdpw.org. Information will be used to establish a listing of students interested in internships and this list will be posted on the PDPW website.
  3. Ask two references to complete the reference form and send them to the PDPW headquarters listed below.
  4. Access the online listing of available internship opportunities at www.pdpw.org. To apply for any of these posted internships, send a cover letter, resume, and application form directly to the potential employer then follow-up with the potential employer to set up an interview.
  5. If the internship is offered to the student, the student must contact PDPW (sorth@pdpw.org) to share which internship they accepted.
  6. Upon completion of the internship, the student should submit a one-page summary of their internship. To reward students who complete on-farm summer internships through the PDPW Enhanced Internship Program, students will receive complimentary registration at the PDPW Annual Business Conference. Should a student chose to receive academic credit for their internship, it is the student's responsibility to complete necessary documentation.
