Merritt & Associates Equine Hospital  offers externships for equine study/science students. They are strictly equine. They care for horses of many breeds and talents, such as: sport/performance, hunter/jumper, western, dressage, eventing, and race (standard bred and thoroughbred). Merritt & Associates is quickly becoming a leading referral hospital in the area providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services for veterinarians, trainers and owners. Their facilities include: Nuclear scintigraphy, surgical suite, high frequency shockwave therapy, digitally enhanced ultrasound, computerized radiography, video endoscopy and pharmacy/lab on premises. We also offer ambulatory services, 24-hr. emergency services, dentistry, reproductive services and acupuncture.

Keith Merritt, DVM, is the owner of the practice. He specializes in equine lameness and respiratory problems. Rachel Heart, DVM, has over 12 years experience as a racetrack veterinarian specializing in sports medicine, lameness and acupuncture. Brad Hill, DVM, specializes in diagnosing and treating muscoskeletal and neurological problems.

Chris Downs, DVM has a special interest in surgical procedures as well as the diagnosing and treatment of lameness in the equine athlete. Scott McClure, DVM and Joe Foerner, DVM handle our surgery cases and Steve Reed, DVM consults on neurologic cases.

Merritt & Associates Equine Hospital's cases include approximately 40% lameness, 20% respiratory, 10% neurology, 15% routine work, 5% nuclear medicine and 10% surgery. Their surgeries are elective procedures: upper airway, arthroscopies and other miscellaneous procedures. The work week is general 50-60 hours or until job is complete. There will be a good amount of diagnostic work-ups, nerve blocks, radiology, ultrasound, endoscopy, bone scans and treatments.

Externships usually last between 1-6 weeks, but they are flexible if the student would like to stay longer. Externs may help doctors with in-house and ambulatory cases: assisting with lameness, medical, dental and reproductive exams, assist with surgery, acupuncture and taking radiographs. Externs may also assist with running blood work and performing treatments on hospitalized patients.
