Internships & Careers

palmer Musk Ox FarmPalmer Musk Ox Farm

Location:  Palmer, Alaska

The Palmer Musk Ox Farm is located in Palmer, Alaska, about 1 hour north of Anchorage. They are comfortably nestled in th Matanuska Valley between the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountains, and the Matanuska River. They are looking for summer interns to assist with farm operations and animal care. Interns are provided with on site housing and a modest stipend.

Work hours are approximately 30 to 40 hours per week. Daily duties include: feeding and watering of animals, pasture clean-up/maintenance, grounds maintenance, willow gathering (musk oxen love willow leaves), moving animals to different pastures, and assisting with veterinary visits. Other activities interns may participate in are: pasture spring clean-up, qiviut collection (musk ox wool), bottle feeding rejected calves, animal combing (for qiviut), haying, calf weaning and acclimatizing to humans, harem set-up (dividing up the musk ox into pastures to facilitate breeding), and preparation activities for winter.

The Palmer Musk Ox Farm is both a working and public educational farm. They offer daily tours throughout the summer and other community events. Interns are not responsible for giving tours or managing the gift shop, but may be asked to assist with tourist management.

Workdays and hours will vary. For example, vet work and annual combing occurs in the cool of the evening, so this is done around 8-10 pm. However, with 20+ hours of daylight, this truly is the land of the midnight sun!

Palmer Musk Ox Farm also ensures that their interns have time off to explore and enjoy the beautiful Matanuska Valley. Some of the areas favorite activities are hiking in nearby Hatcher's Pass, fishing (King Salmon start their run in June, and the Reds and Silvers are in a full frenzy by August), and living near other farms that produce world record vegetables.

They ask that all interns, staff, and visitors honor their policy of being a non-smoking facility.

They also ask for at least a six-week commitment, but those able to stay the whole season get priority.
