Advance sustainability initiatives associated with Stonyfield's organic milk purchases.

Stonyfield's Milk Mission Action Program (MAP) Team focuses on developing milk production and transportation practices that protect and restore the planet, support the highest standards of animal care, and promote the economic prosperity of family farms.  They are looking for an enthusiastic, sustainability-minded, cow-loving intern to help advance the team's work in several areas:

  1. The production of milk is the largest part of Stonyfield's contribution to climate change. They work on projects to reduce dairy greenhouse gas emissions in several areas (enteric emission, manure management, milk transportation, etc.), but they do not have a comprehensive baseline measure of on-farm GHG emissions that would allow them to evaluate progress over time. They want to pilot what they have identified as the best-available measurement tool on up to 20 CROPP Cooperative (their organic milk supplier) farms and make recommendations about a wider roll-out.
  2. Emissions from milk transport are a smaller but still important part of their carbon footprint. By combining baseline data on milk transport GHGs with their long-term sourcing plans, the intern will recommend reduction goals and identify opportunities for meeting those goals.
  3. Depending on time, there will be additional opportunities to work on ongoing projects addressing enteric emissions and manure management strategies.

  • Background in dairy and demonstrated interest in organic farming systems
  • Excellent communication skills, especially with farmers
  • Strong sills in Excel
  • Start Date: no later than June 7 (earlier preferred)
  • Openness to work part-time into the Fall
