Location:  Ithaca, New York

If you are interested in getting some experience with hoofed animals but aren't crazy about cows, here's an opportunity that may interest you.

Laughing Goat Fiber is located on a 50-acre farm in upstate New York, near the southern gateway to the spectacular Finger Lakes region. Ithaca is a great place for young adults, being the home of Cornell University and Ithaca College. It is much like Burlington in the sense that it's a cosmopolitan town with a dynamic community. Laughing Goat is a relatively new business and they could really use the help taking care of their animals. They are committed to sustainable agriculture and are currently experimenting with movable shelters, winter grazing, rotational grazing, etc. They have several species of goats.

Intern responsibilities involve all of the farm activities: animal care (hoof trimming, shearing, feeding, tagging, medicating, kidding, moving animals, etc.), equipment care (stacking hay, fence repair, tour set up, building shelters), fiber work (spinning, dyeing, skeining, pricing, etc.).

Housing is not yet available but they are hoping to be able to offer it by the fall of 2010. Hours can be flexible if students need to go to classes or work. However, interns are expected to be organized enough to fill out a schedule and make every effort to arrive as planned.

Laughing Goat Fiber accepts interns throughout the year.
