providertemplate UVM Horse Barn Manager/Management Internship

Location:  So. Burlington, Vermont.

This internship provides experience in all aspects of stable management.  9-12 Month Internship.  Academic credit dependant on length of term.  Applications due each year in mid-March.  See Josie Davis for applications & additional information.


  • Experience in co-operative barn operation, experience managing horses, owner of a horse(s) that applicant has (had) full car of
  • EQUUS experience, or, past/present barn member; may or may not have a horse in the barn at present
  • Junior or Senior standing
  • Works well with others
  • application approved by Barn Members
  • Reports to barn staff person (Mark Young); meets monthly with faculty, staff, and executive board for planning, reviewing, and problem solving.
  • Prepares and gives reports at end of each semester (barn budget, use of facility, facility and pasture upkeep)
  • works with and supports EQUUS, including:  oversees EQUUS in the barn, serves as mentor and instructor for novices, teaches aspects of management to EQUUS class/semester
  • oversees ASCI horses and equipment
  • prepares for equine labs and/or extension workshops/clinics, including assist with Equine Fair
  • establishes/uses business program on the computer
  • responsible for ordering of feed and supplies
  • oversees pasture management
  • schedules Ellen A. Hardacre Arena use
  • organizes pasture watch and night check scheduling
  • schedules and presides over all barn meetings
  • upholds barn rules and policies (along with Executive Board members)
