Location:  Mapleton, Maine

Maple Meadow Farms specializes in working with Belgian draft horses for the production of small grains, hay, and forestry using sustainable practices. Their farm focuses on forage for the horse owner, produced by the horse owner. All aspects of their farm operation relies on the daily use of Belgian draft teams. Annually, during the last weekend of June, the farm hosts a festival celebrating agriculture and rural living. There are many educational opportunities for festival attendees about farming with horses and the many uses of animals in sustainable agricultural practices.

Interns will participate in the daily operations of the farm including, but not limited to:
  • Working with Belgian draft horses
  • Fieldwork - planting, plowing, cultivating,etc.
  • General farm labor - care of other farm animals, small gardens, light maintenance
  • Haying - raking, tetting, mowing, baling
  • Festival preparation
Interns will gain knowledge and experience in:
  • Driving draft teams
  • Fieldwork with draft teams
  • Handling, grooming, and tacking
  • Quality forage production
  • Care and nutrition of Belgian draft horses
Ideal applicants will have a strong interest in caring for and working with Belgian draft horses; be able to complete physical labor; have an interest in learning about sustainable practices; willing to share knowledge, and be self-directed.

Some modest lodging and meal accommodations are available.
