High
Horses Therapeutic Riding has been serving residents of the Upper
Connecticut River Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire since
1993. They are one of only two programs in Vermont, whose standards
meet the demanding criteria to attain "Premiere Accreditation" by the
North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). High
Horses is a 501(c)3 charitable corporation.
Their
riders come to them with a wide range of disabilities including autism,
cerebral palsy, developmental delay and emotional challenges. They
range in age from three years to ninety-two. Approximately 65% of their
riders are under age 18. They have a waiting list of applicants eager
to join their program.
Their
horses are the foundation of their program. Each of their horses is
carefully screened and selected for its calm, tolerant, and willing
temperament.
Their
program runs May through October. They operate at Brookside Farm in
Wilder, VT and offer three seven-week sessions. Their riders
participate in either their Therapeutic Riding Program with a certified
instructor, their Hippotherapy Program with a licensed physical or
occupational therapist, or their Connections program which is an
hour-long session with a mental health focus combining therapeutic
riding and the use of expressive arts.
