Location:  Amherst, Massachusetts.

Internships are available to qualified applicants with a BS degree and relevant equine experience.  The two interns will supervise and participate in all aspects of farm management and daily horse care at the Hadley Farm, including barn operations, health care, research, breeding, foaling and facility maintenance.  Formal and informal training will prepare individuals for quality positions anywhere in the equine industry.  Interns work under general spervision of the Hadley Farm Manager and the Director of the Equine Studies Program.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

  • Oversee and assist in farm management and daily care of horse herd.
  • Participate in veterinary treatments and health programs.
  • Assist in the maintenance of barns and equipment.
  • Assist with research herd.
  • Manage emergency situations such as colic, loose horses, etc.
  • Interact with the Public in a professional manner.
  • Assist with Continuing Education Programs, Shows and Clinics.
  • Perform related farm duties as required.
DETAILED STATEMENT OF TRAINING PROVIDED:
  • Breeding management of mares and stallions.
  • Health care.
  • Record keeping.
  • Supervision of part time employees.
  • Purchasing, planning and facility maintenance.
  • Nutrition and pasture management.
  • Balancing multiple farm activities; including riding, breeding, teaching, events, research, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • B.S. degree in Animal Science, Equine Studies or related area.
  • Knowledge of general care and health of horses.
COMPENSATION:
  • Annual salary
  • Use of University facilities
  • On-farm housing at reduced rent
