Shawna KarraschShawna Karrasch's story is equal parts hard work, persistence, Cinderella, and unshakable faith. Ever since childhood, Shawna had a love for animals and adventure. Her part-time job at Sea World of California changed her life. When the part-time summer job turned into a full-time job, Shawna started a career that would put her in the public eye in a big way. Working with the whales in the show, Shawna was center stage, but still worked backstage with the show producers to block and stage the daily shows. She also learned about meal preparation, medical information, exercise programs and even assisted in minor vet procedures from e-rays to minor surgeries. How did this young lady with the 'show biz' career in the whale pool end up in the world of horses? She was a guest at a grand prix equestrian event at Del Mar, California. She fell in love with horses at that event, and eventually they became the center of her life. As an animal trainer used to Sea World, the horses seemed an exotic change of pace. She was fascinated by the possibility of applying Sea World's tried and true training system to horses. Two years later Shawna took time for her first riding lesson and the rest, as they say, is history. Shawna took her Sea World methods and proved them in the world of horses with what is now her patented training program, On Target * Training. The method is simple; a small hand operated clicker, a 'target' on a stick, and a waist-mounted container of food. The results are amazing and it is interesting to see that the horse is actually motivated by its own desire to perform. Karrasch, along with her husband Vinton, takes the clinics and performances on the road each year, traveling to as many as 30 different locations nationwide where horsemen gather to watch her training method in action. In addition to the On Target * Training methods, she also talks about nutrition, health care and the importance of a well-designed, well-informed program for the horse.
