COMPANION ANIMALS

The relationships between humans and their pet animals are diverse, involving companionship, recreation, sport and service. Often these animals can have a profound effect on our well-being. For example, ownership of a pet can increase the life expectancy of heart attack patients. We are all familiar with the devoted service that a seeing eye dog gives to its owner but now we see dogs acting as sniffer dogs to detect drugs, and rescue dogs helping find victims of earthquakes and disasters. Increasingly human interests have expanded to keeping other types of animals as companions including reptiles, exotic birds, and even insects.
