Assistant Professor of Animal Health

The Department of Animal Science at the University of Vermont invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of animal health. This is a 9 month, tenure track, research and teaching position.  Responsibilities include teaching and course development to expand upper-level undergraduate and graduate level course opportunities in the area of animal health including microbial pathogenesis, global animal health and livestock production, veterinary public health, and zoonotic disease. Advising undergraduate and graduate students, and University service is also expected. The appointee will be required to develop a funded, innovative research program in animal health preferably with a focus on diseases of dairy cattle and infectious disease epidemiology and will be encouraged to collaborate with colleagues within and outside the Department to strengthen research work in the are of bovine mastitis epidemiology and control. Research that encompasses studies on the molecular basis of disease, host-pathogen interactions, and population level studies of disease control is preferred. Position Information


Assistant/Associate Professor of Ruminant Nutrition

The Department of Animal Science at The University of Vermont (UVM) invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Ruminant Nutrition. This is a 9 month, tenure track, research and teaching position. Responsibilities include teaching an introductory nutrition and feeds course focusing on ruminant and monogastric domestic animals, contributing to upper or graduate level courses, and advising undergraduate and graduate students. University service is also expected. The appointee will be required to develop a funded, innovative research program and will be encouraged to collaborate with colleagues within and outside the Department to strengthen national and Vermont dairy issues. Research focused on dairy cattle is preferred.  Position Information



Graduate Assistantships

The Department of Animal Science at The University of Vermont (UVM) currently has several graduate assistantship positions available for qualified applicants seeking graduate training leading to an M.S. or Ph.D. degree. These positions will be in the areas of mammary gland biology, lactation physiology, molecular genetics, biotechnology, mastitis, breast cancer or nutrition within the Department's center of excellence in lactation and mammary gland biology.  A joint training opportunity is also available in the area of dairy cow nutrition, behavior, or management with scientists at The William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute located in Chazy, NY.

Expressions of interest and applications are invited from highly motivated and intellectually creative prospective graduate students. Applicants should preferably hold a B.S. in Animal Science, Biological Science, Dairy Science, or a related field. Established in 1791, UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont, a small city situated on the shores of Lake Champlain between the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The Department of Animal Science currently has 13 faculty members, 13 graduate students and approximately 240 undergraduate students in pre-veterinary, equine, and dairy programs.

Post-Doctoral Position Available

A post-doctoral position is available to study mammary gland development and breast cancer.  Areas of interest include deranged signaling., interaction of growth factors and estrogen receptors, and development of mouse models for breast cancer. The ideal candidate will have experience with molecular and cell biology. Experience in animal modeling, histopathology, and cancer biology is a plus.

Vermont Large Animal Clinic Equine Hospital
Job Opening Announcement

Vermont Large Animal Clinic Equine Hospital is seeking an ICU technician for the UVM student tech program. Animal Science majors with pre-veterinary emphasis are encouraged to apply, but all members of the equine community are welcome. The applicant must provide his/her own reliable transportation - clinic us located in Milton, about 1/2 hour from campus. This position requires flexibility - nights, weekends, and holidays. Responsibility, self-sufficiency, and attention to detail are the critical attributes for applicants. Previous veterinary experience welcome, but not necessary. Horse-handling (large animal) experience is required. You will learn the skills of a surgical technician and animal health technician. There is high exposure to interesting surgical and medical cases. Underclassmen will be given priority, as training is extensive.

The Vermont Large Animal Clinic Equine Hospital is an advanced medical and surgical facility featuring 24-hour emergency care and surgery, the latest diagnostic tools, and progressive medicine. They are a six-doctor practice with three boarded specialists in equine medicine and surgery.

Responsibilities include:
  • Patient care and treatments
  • Surgical technician duties for emergency surgeries including colic
  • Overnight ICU patient monitoring
  • Basic barn chores
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of surgical suite, treatment rooms, etc.
  • Basic laboratory diagnostics
  • Horse handling and walking
  • Assisting veterinarians with routine treatments and diagnostics
  • Time-management and self-motivational skills
